Made in SOUTH KOREA.
NOTES:
- the piece together with other small celadon items are "rescued" (bought) from a Korean surplus shop in Mandaluyong City (in the Philippines).
- I collect celadon ware, and this is one of the smaller pieces. I love this so much because it is a distinctive representation of a Korean Celadon especially with the black and white crane decoration that is invented by the Koreans. This type of decoration requires special techniques in the make up of the clay and application of the glaze.
A Bit of Trivia:
- How the jade-green pottery is called "celadon" is not known. There were many theories and assumptions. The most popular one is from the French play whose main character named Celadon wore a green costume that resembled the color of the jade-green pottery.
- Did you know that the word "celadon" in pottery refers to a type of glaze as well as to a type of ware? A porcelain or stoneware clay body can have a celadon glaze. This makes the final product a celadon ware. Note that not all celadon ware are green in color. There are white, blue, grey, brown, red, and other colors of a celadon glaze. These ware are considered celadon because of the specific composition of the clay and glaze. So you see, "not all green wares are celadon, and not all celadon are green".
